A mass shooting is a single outburst of violence in which four or more people are shot, not counting the shooter. That is the definition used by the Gun Violence Archive and the Mass Shooting Tracker. It is not the FBI's definition of mass murder, and it is not the narrower public-place standard that some newsrooms use, which counts roughly a dozen a year instead of several hundred. Every number on this page answers this question and no other.

One horizontal rule per ten people, every fifth of them darker. The worst single day was July 5, 2026, when 89 people were shot. Flat grey marks a day with none, and 122 of these 365 days recorded no mass shooting at all.

The counter has never reached 11. Its highest reading since records began in 2013 is 10, in the stretch ending September 5, 2013, when the database was new and thinly sourced. Since 2020, once coverage became consistent, it has never gone past 5, a run that ended April 24, 2020.
