How to read it
This map largely traces where Americans live. The densest clusters are Chicago, Philadelphia, Houston, Baltimore and Detroit, which are among the largest cities in the country. A dot map of almost any event will reproduce the population map, and reading this one as a ranking of which places are most dangerous would be a mistake. It answers one question only: where has this happened.
It is also incomplete. 6,177 of 7,652 incidents carry coordinates; the rest are on file with a city and state but were never geocoded by the source database, so they cannot be placed and are not drawn here. The counter and the register include them. The map does not.
